It has been said by those in the know that the world is made up of fools, madmen and those who willingly line up for the IMPI Hard Enduro. Having witnessed what these riders put themselves through, it is difficult to argue otherwise.
Regarded as the biggest multi-day hard enduro event in the world, the IMPI once again brought together well over 1,200 riders for three days of punishment across the unforgiving terrain of South Africa’s Northern Drakensberg.
Between 2 and 4 July, the mountains surrounding Hlalanathi and Maswazini became a proving ground where rocky climbs, loose descents and endless kilometres of technical trails separated those who merely entered from those who conquered.
The scale of the event is impressive enough on paper, but numbers alone struggle to capture what makes the IMPI such a spectacle. The mountains become filled with the sound of motorcycles fighting for traction, while riders battle terrain that appears determined to send them back in the direction from which they came.
The IMPI attracts everyone from the country’s leading extreme enduro riders to club competitors and weekend warriors, with competitors ranging from riders under the age of 10 to veterans approaching 80, all prepared to discover just how much punishment they, and their motorcycles, can absorb over the course of the event.
That is also what makes supporting an event of this size and difficulty rather more complicated than placing a few banners around the paddock.
As the official lubricants partner of the 2026 IMPI Hard Enduro, LIQUI MOLY South Africa became an integral part of the event and the rider experience, with its involvement stretching from the paddock to the refuel points out on the route.
The company’s presence could be felt long before riders crossed the finish line and continued long after they returned from the mountains covered in dust, mud and evidence of whichever section of the course had most recently tried to defeat them.
Supporting Riders on the Mountain
Hard enduro places extraordinary demands on motorcycles.
Engines spend hours operating at low speeds and high temperatures, while clutches, chains and drivetrains are placed under constant strain. Add rocks, river crossings, dust and the occasional unplanned meeting with the scenery, and reliability becomes every bit as important as outright performance.

It is easy to focus on the riders at the sharp end of the results, but the same support is just as important to the competitor chasing a first IMPI finish or attempting to drag both themselves and their motorcycle through the final few kilometres.
At that point, a lubricated chain, a minor repair or simply having someone available who knows what they are looking at can feel every bit as valuable as a trophy.
The refuel points therefore became more than places to collect fuel. They offered competitors a brief opportunity to reset, assess their motorcycles and gather themselves before heading back into the mountains.
That support formed part of the machinery behind the event, operating quietly while the riders attracted most of the attention.
Helping Riders and Machines Recover
Even after hours spent battling rocks, dust and exhaustion, LIQUI MOLY’s involvement continued.
Bike-wash facilities, along with dedicated helmet and visor-cleaning stations, welcomed exhausted competitors back into the paddock, helping riders and machines recover before the next challenge.
Anyone who has ridden in dusty conditions will understand just how quickly visibility can deteriorate, particularly once sweat, mud and debris are added to the equation. A clean helmet and visor might appear to be a small detail, but after several hours in the mountains, small details begin to matter rather a lot.
The same applies to the motorcycles.
Hard enduro is not kind to machinery, and cleaning a bike after a difficult day allows riders and technical crews to inspect it properly, identify damage and prepare it for whatever the following morning has in store.
With a multi-day event, finishing one day is only part of the challenge. The rider and motorcycle must be ready to do it all again.
More Than Branding
It is often the unseen moments that define a great event.
The helping hand at a refuel stop. A freshly cleaned visor before heading back into the mountains. The confidence that comes from knowing expert support is waiting when it is needed most.
Those moments do not win races, but they make them possible.

It was measured in the hundreds of riders who were able to continue, the motorcycles that made it back to the paddock and the support provided throughout one of the most demanding events on the South African motorcycling calendar.
The 2026 IMPI also took place during one of the biggest weekends in South African motorcycling this year.
While more than 1,200 hard enduro riders were battling the Northern Drakensberg, the world’s motocross elite were competing in the long-awaited return of MXGP to South Africa just a few hundred kilometres away.
Supporting both the return of MXGP and the country’s biggest hard enduro event on the same weekend was no small undertaking—it was a statement.
From international championship racing to grassroots hard enduro, LIQUI MOLY’s involvement demonstrated a commitment to South African motorcycling that stretches far beyond a single event or discipline.
