South African motocross fans have waited almost two decades for this moment. This weekend, the FIM Motocross World Championship finally returns to local soil.
After an 18-year absence, the FIM Motocross World Championship returns to the country on 4 and 5 July 2026 at Terra Topia Track in Johannesburg, marking the championship’s first visit to South Africa since 2008 and a significant milestone for local motocross fans.
The South African round forms part of the global MXGP calendar and brings together international riders, local talent, motorsport brands and families for a full weekend of racing.
The return of MXGP is being delivered locally by Emmanuel Groupe, in collaboration with Mlimi Racing Co., the South African partner in the project, and international MXGP rights and event stakeholders, with the aim of establishing South Africa as a regular host on the MXGP calendar.
“This is bigger than one race weekend. MXGP returning after 18 years is a statement that South Africa can once again host international motorsport at this level. The goal is to deliver a strong first edition and build a sustainable platform for 2027 and 2028,” said a spokesman for the 2026 South Africa MXGP organising team.
The event will take place at Terra Topia, where extensive preparations have been completed ahead of the championship. The build-up includes track preparation, hospitality planning, fan areas, partner activations, media engagement, vendor coordination and local service-provider involvement.
Saturday, 4 July, will feature practice, time practice and qualifying race action, giving fans a full day of live track activity. Sunday, 5 July, will carry the main race programme, including MX2 and MXGP Race 1 and Race 2.
